Card of the Week 14/07/2021

by Sanctuary Gaming

Hi guys, Jordan from Sanctuary Gaming here.

I am trying to do a series of blog post where i cover upcoming Pokemon Cards that will be released and how they will impact the current meta in the near future.

Today's Card of the Week will be Umbreon V & Umbreon VMax that will be releasing in Sword & Shield 7 Evolving Skies.

Lets take a look at the cards shall we

Umbreon V (HP200)

(D) Mean Look 30 Damage

During your opponent's next turn, the defending Pokemon can't retreat

(D)(C)(C) Lunar Blade 80+ Damage

If this Pokemon has any damage counters on it, this attack doesn 100 more damage.

Weakness Grass x2

Retreat Cost (C)(C)

Umbreon VMAX (310 HP)

Ability Dark Signal

When you play this Pokemon from your hand to evolve 1 of your Pokemon during your turn, you may switch 1 of your opponent's Benched Pokemon with their Active Pokemon

(D)(C)(C) Max Darkness 160 Damage

Weakness Grass x2

Retreat Cost (C)(C)

Looking at the attacks from these 2 cards they are not particularly good but Umbreon Vmax has an amazing ability that enables its users to 'Gust' their opponent's Benched Pokemon when it evolves. This universal 'Gusting' effect makes it really versatile and many decks with excess bench space will be happy to include a couple of copies of this card into their deck! As Umbreon is a Dark type Pokemon, it can be used together with Eternatus Vmax from Darkness Ablaze Set to fully capitalise on Eternatus Vmax's Eternal Zone Ability!

'Origins of the [Gust] type effects"

Eternatus VMAX (340 HP)

Ability Eternal Zone

If all of your Pokemon in play are (D) Type, you can have up to 8 Pokemon on your Bench, and you can't put non (D) Pokemon into Play.(If this Ability Stops working, discard Pokemon from your Bench until you have 5.)

(D)(C) Dread End 30x Damage

This attack does 30 damage for each of your (D) Pokemon in Play.

Weakness (F)x2

Retreat (C)(C)(C)

There was a recent tournament in China (with Eevee Heroes) and there were 2 Eternatus/Umbreon Decks showcased as the top 16 Decks for that event. Here is 1 of the deck list.

This deck runs a high count of dark type Pokemon as Eternatus Vmax's ability allows you to have 3 additional Bench Spaces for dark types & its a perfect combination with Pokemon like Umbreon Vmax and Crobat V that needs the bench space to continuously get value off their powerful abilities when played!(Disclaimer: You can only have 5 bench space if Eternatus is not evolved)

That concludes today's Card of the Week post and see you guys next week!
